The first thing you should consider when trying to pick out the right wedges for your game is the loft of your highest lofted iron. If you play a 46 ° pitching wedge, you want 4 degrees gaps between each of your clubs. So 46 degree pitching wedge, then a 50 degree gap wedge, a 54 degree sand wedge and a 58 degree lob wedge. That will ensure that you have the right loft for any distance you have as you approach the green. Now, once you get closer to the green you need to consider your short game style. So let’s take two, 54° wedges as an example. So these are two Titleist Vokey wedges with different grinds and different bounces. Depending on your style of short game you would use a different one of these wedges and we’d recommend a different one for different styles. So if you tend to fat the ball, that’s your trouble shot, we might give you a higher bounce 54° wedge. This wedge, when it sits on the ground, has a leading edge that sits higher above the ground so it doesn’t dig like a knife. Sort of the anti-fat wedge. Now, if you’re someone who tends to thin the ball or you just don’t have too much trouble with fatting it. We might build you a more versatile wedge. So now we’ve got a 54° wedge with 10° of bounce. So now that leading, knife edge doesn’t sit quite as high above the ground. It’s a little closer to it but then also there’s relief along the trail edge. So now when you sit this
down and open it up the leading edge doesn’t come up too high. So it’s sort of an anti thin shot or anti thin club. So depending on your short game style, different wedges would work best for you and it’s important to find the right wedge so you don’t mess up those shots around the green.
